FEATURED WATER

Tau Spring WaterTAU
Taking its name from an ancient Welsh word for ‘to be silent’, Tau Spring Water is specifically designed for outlets such as designer hotels, restaurants, bars and cafes where color may not be appropriate but purity, quality and elegance are essential. Launched in 2003, Tau Spring Water is produced by internationally renowned Tŷ Nant Spring Water Ltd. which is situated in the West Wales county of Ceredigion.

Map of source of TAUThe Company was founded in 1989 and moved to its current purpose-built factory at the site of the source in 1996. The facility was extended in 2002. The factory is situated within 300 acres of pastureland and forestry. The land is maintained to organic standards, and the evergreen conifer forestry is being replaced in stages with a more environmentally friendly broadleaf wood. Tau is bottled at the source which comes from deep beneath the ancient Cambrian Mountains of Wales, an area of mudstone, siltstone and sandstone that is protected and organically managed. Tau Spring Water was created to satisfy the need for a contemporary clear glass bottled water. Tau's chic minimalist styling and monochromatic labeling creates a strikingly contemporary statement. A well-balanced water with a light, refreshing taste and a slightly sweet note. At 30.5 mg/l of Calcium, 12.2 mg/l of Magnesium, and 13.5 mg/l of Silica, the water has a distinct quality, and it manages to deliver the goods with a neutral pH of 7.2, a very low-TDS (208), and negligible Nitrates. Tau Spring Water, is available in both still and softly sparkling variants.

Florida Considering A Deposit Law

Ten states currently employ “bottle bills” or “deposit laws”. These states collect between 5 and 15 cents/ bottle. A senate bill recently introduced in the Florida legislature would call for between 20 and 30 cents per bottle. This is expected to receive large opposition from consumers and distributors. The bill calls for 20% to be given to the retailer, as an incentive to muffle their complaints. States that collect the deposits see tens of millions of dollars in unredeemed deposits each year.

Maine Attempting To Tax Nestles

Describes as a water withdrawal tax, a recent proposal seems to go after, not only one industry but one particular company. Nestles, under the Poland Springs label, uses about 1.5 million gallons per year, could be facing an excise tax of $.12/ per gallon. That equates to approximately $180,000. The IBWA (Int’l Bottled Water Assoc) and the NEBWA (Northeast Bottled Water Assoc) have strongly opposed bill LD 1074.

Aloha, Where Will It End?

Hawaii Senate Bill 522 is still alive. The Bill has been amended, however as currently written calls for a statewide ban on ALL single serve plastic beverage containers. The measure prohibits the purchase, use, sale or distribution of single-use plastic beverage containers. Included, is the ban on all such products in restaurants, bars, hotels and other businesses where food and beverages are sold.

Is PURE Water Really Clear?

First, you will rarely see pure water as it is not found in a natural setting. The everyday water you see contains dissolved minerals and often suspended materials. But, for practical purposes, if you fill a glass from your faucet the water will look colorless. The water is in fact not colorless; even pure water is not colorless, but has a slight blue tint to it, best seen when looking through a long column of water. The blueness in water is not caused by the scattering of light, which is responsible for the sky being blue. Rather, water blueness comes from the water molecules absorbing the red end of the spectrum of visible light.

FEATURED WATER

VolvicVolvic
In a region where water has been famous for its beneficial properties since antiquity, the Volvic valley has kept the qualities of its water a deeply buried secret for centuries.

Map of source of Volvic, FranceVolvic water is drawn from the heart of the Parc Naturel des Volcans d'Auvergne in central France, a protected environment, free from industry and intensive farming. The ancient "Temple of Mercury" crowns the summit of the famous Puy de Dôme, proving the volcanoes have been recognized and revered for centuries.

Volvic water is created by rainwater that seeps very slowly underground through porous layers of puzzolana and fissured lava down to the impermeable granite bed on the old valley bottom. When it reaches the impervious bedrock, the water slowly flows downstream where it is captured over 90 meters deep.

Volvic water is drawn from deep inside the lush, green ancient volcanoes of the Auvergne in France. Specifically, taken from the Clairivic spring in the Massif Central region.

Volvic, as the name implies, has a volcanic geological basis,
source volvic, france most evident in its 30 mg/l level of Silica, one of the world's more potent mineral water sources for this element. The perfectly neutral pH of 7.0, and overall low 109 mg/l total mineralization, makes Volvic a special water, truly unique in its chemistry. At 6.3 mg/l, the Nitrate level is a little higher, but in the case of Volvic, this slight excess is probably offset by the water's virtues.

Despite critical media coverage of plastic, Americans have a highly positive view of all water including bottled water.

  • 99% drink water.
  • 91% believe bottled water is healthy and convenient.
  • 84% feel they should drink more water.
  • Of bottled water drinkers, 98% choose it for taste, 98% for quality, 90% for safety, 81% for convenience on the go, 70% for lack of artificial sweeteners and 68% for low calorie content.
Americans’ choice of different water types is broken down by the survey:
  • 16% drink only bottled.
  • 21% drink mostly bottled.
  • 37% drink bottled and tap/filtered equally.
  • 16% drink mostly tap/filtered.

Do You Know What This Is?

Water Cohesion
water drops on pine needles showing both adhesion and cohesion

In simple terms;

Cohesion: Water is attracted to water
Adhesion: Water is attracted to other substances

Adhesion and cohesion are water properties that affect every water molecule on earth and the interaction of water molecules with molecules of other substances. Essentially, cohesion and adhesion are the "stickiness" that water molecules have for each other and for other substances. You can see this in the image above. The water drop is composed of water molecules that like to stick together, an example of the property of cohesion. The water drop is stuck to the end of the pine needles, which is an example of the property of adhesion.

TRIVIA

Pure water has a neutral pH of 7, which is neither acidic (< 7) nor basic (> 7).

The water molecule is highly cohesive—it is very sticky. Water is the most cohesive among the non-metallic liquids.

Pure water, which you won't ever find in the natural environment, does not conduct electricity. Water becomes a conductor once it starts dissolving substances around it.

Water has a high heat index—it absorbs a lot of heat before it begins to get hot. It is why water is valuable for cooling, and helps regulate changes in air temperature which is why the temperature change between seasons is gradual rather than sudden, especially near the oceans.

Water has a very high surface tension, and tends to clump together in drops rather than spread out in a thin film, like rubbing alcohol. It allows water (and its dissolved substances) to move through the roots of plants and through the tiny blood vessels in our bodies.

Speyside GlenlivetSpeyside Glenlivet
The source of Speyside Glenlivet is located in Greater Speyside, which covers a wide area of Scotland from the Culloden battlefield in the east, to the Cairngorms National Park in the south. It offers beautiful scenery, heather covered hills, clear rushing burns, a high concentration of whisky distilleries, an abundance of wildlife, superb local produce and silence.

Map of source of Speyside Glenlivet, ScotlandThe spring is in the Crown estate of Glenlivet, which sits in the high land to the north east of the Cairngorms and contains the lower reaches of the Avon and its famous tributary the Livet, plus of course the world renowned river Spey. Speyside Glenlivet is one of the world's greatest whisky producing regions and home to many of Scotland’s most famous distilleries. At its heart lies the small but globally renowned village of Glenlivet. Historians reveal that the world’s first whisky distillery was founded here over two hundred years ago.

Speyside Glenlivet Source, ScotlandMost true Scotch drinkers will recognize the name immediately. The water is superb for adding a touch to many of the whiskey's from the same region of Scotland. If you're a scotch drinker, we need say no more.

Speyside Glenlivet Source, Scotland, UKConsistent with the pristine quality of this gorgeous, rugged countryside, the chemistry of Speyside Glenlivet is equally pure. The geology is a 500 million year-old rock formation called the Braes of Glenlivet. The springs – named Slochd and Clash – are at an altitude of 1,520 feet. Speyside’s pH is 7.7, a slightly alkaline level favored by many because it delivers a slightly sweet after taste. Total Dissolved Solids are a mere 58 milligrams per liter, ranking Speyside in the “pure” category. Nitrates are extremely low at 1.0 mg/l, and the only two chemical elements with any prominence are Bicarbonates at 45 mg/l, and Calcium, which weighs in at 13 mg/l.

Or perhaps soda, “still” water with sugar and flavoring, and maybe some carbonation? Or perhaps, vodka, primarily ethanol and “still” water. This goes to show just how much marketing can do for a product. It also shows just how gullible the consumer may be? Pura Still contains 4.5% alcohol by volume…we’ll call it a “flat beer”.

Do You Know What This Is?

Globule of water and air pocket in zero gravityIt’s teaching us about physics and gravity. This picture shows not only a water drop but also an air bubble inside of the water drop. This picture comes from NASA, and was taken in space, and of course, zero gravity. According to the laws of physics (in space), both droplets form spheres, which is a shape having the least amount of surface area. On Earth, gravity would distort the shape, and the air bubble, lighter than water, would race upward to burst through the surface of the droplet.

In space, the air bubble doesn't rise because it is no lighter than the water around it—there's no buoyancy. The droplet doesn't fall from the leaf because there's no force to pull it off. It's stuck there by molecular adhesion.

TRIVIA

Water is unique in that it is the only natural substance that is found in all three physical states—liquid, solid, and gas.

Water freezes at 32° Fahrenheit (F) and boils at 212°F (at sea level), but boils at 186.4° at 14,000 feet.

Water is unusual in that the solid form, ice, is less dense than the liquid form, which is why ice floats.

Water is called the "universal solvent" because it dissolves more substances than any other liquid.

Wherever water goes, either through the ground or through our bodies, it takes along valuable chemicals, minerals, and nutrients, dissolved solids.

FEATURED WATER

PerrierPerrier
According to legend, as far back as 218 BC, Hannibal and his army, after crossing Spain on their way to conquer Rome, set up camp on the site of what would later become known as Les Bouillens (Perrier), a naturally carbonated spring. Soldiers found it remarkably refreshing. The Romans were the first to build a stone basin at the site of the spring, along with a few buildings. These installations were a precursor to the spa that would be built much later on.

Map of source of Perrier, FranceCommercial operation really took hold only in 1863, when Napoleon III signed a decree acknowledging that the spring water was a natural mineral water. Six years later, in 1869, fire razed the Vergèze installations. Despite attempts to restore the site, the company experienced heavy losses, and eventually went bankrupt. Louis Rouvière, a Vergèze landowner and businessman, bought the Bouillens estate in 1888, and in 1894, leased the spring, with an option to purchase, to a doctor from Nîmes. In 1898, Dr. Louis Perrier took over ownership of the Bouillens estate.

In 1903, Sir St.-John Harmsworth, a member of the English aristocracy, invested in the property and renamed the spring from Les Bouillens to Source Perrier, named after the dedicated physician who brought it to his attention. St John Harmsworth was instrumental in developing the Perrier Spring Company, giving it a strong identity and image, and became responsible for the distinctively shaped bottle.

Chalet PerrierPerrier's famous green bottle became popular throughout Europe and was the first sparkling natural mineral water in the U.S. Perrier became an intrinsic part of an active, healthy American lifestyle in the late 1970s.

Nestlé took over Perrier in 1992, forming what would eventually be known as Nestlé Waters SA, which leads the world bottled water market today with 73 brands, including such names as Perrier, Vittel, Valvert, San Pellegrino, Acqua Panna and Contrex.

TŶ Nant pronounced Tee Nant (short as in ant), means house by the stream. The region from where TŶ Nant is drawn, lies in an unspoiled rural area of mid Wales. Sourced from deep beneath the ancient Cambrian Mountains, an area of outstanding natural beauty, TŶ Nant offers consumers the unique opportunity to sample one of nature's most treasured products - natural mineral water.

Map of source of TŶ Nant, Wales - UKThe purity of TŶ Nant is attributed to an unusual aquifer lodged in a dense geological formation. TŶ Nant natural mineral water has unique characteristics. This is primarily due to the character of the regions underlying geology. The discovery of this source was recent and occurred in 1976. TŶ Nant has no Nitrates, a neutral pH, and very low total mineralization at only 165 mg/l. Once famous only for their eye-popping cobalt blue glass bottle shaped like a bowling pin, it is offered in both still and carbonated varieties. A Users Guide To Bottled Water

That is the title of an article written by Bob Morris, an American Novelist. Perhaps it should have been called “One users guide….” We are NOT being critical of his writing, on the contrary, it’s very interesting and supports our philosophy about bottled water, but it is his experience “sourcing the sources”, to use his words. It is a week in the life of Bob, as he travels around Europe on the “ultimate hydration tour”. He visits the sources of waters like Evian, Perrier and San Pellegrino. It’s a short read and worth the time.
It can be found here.

IBWA Launches Podcast About Bottled Water

The International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) has launched its own podcast, “H2O In The Know,” as a new way to connect with consumers and ensure they have access to key bottled water facts. H2O In The Know offers consumers a great new way to learn interesting facts and stories about water, especially bottled water. For our readers, this Podcast is bottled water in general. Although the regulations apply, it does not distinguish between channels and the “Fine Water” segment.

Smart TV’s, Smart Cars…and now a Smart Bottle

Water IOIsrael based Water.IO has developed a Smart Cap, which turns your water bottle into a Smart Bottle. Download the corresponding App, and your water bottle, via your phone, will monitor how much water you have consumed, how much remains in the bottle and when you need to take another drink. The new cap recently won “Best New Cap or Closure” category in Zenith Global’s Global Bottled Water Awards.

Alkaline Water…Is It Really Better For You?

It seems most companies that produce a high alkaline water are very careful not to make many claims about the benefits of a high pH water. pH in general is very unstable. An Alkaline water which may be artificially doctored to raise the pH level at time of bottling, may not test at the same level when opened for consumption. Additionally, when a high pH water is introduced into the body, the stomach immediately begins producing more acid to counter the high pH and bring the body back into an equilibrium. A recent court case in California against Trader Joe’s Alkaline Water was tossed out of court because (fortunately for Trader Joe’s) the bottle did not make any claims about any added benefits.

TRIVIA

Today, drinking water meets over a hundred different standards for drinking water quality.

We are very fortunate, most of the world's people must walk at least 3 hours to fetch water.

The overall amount of water on our planet has remained the same. It is just found in different states, gaseous (clouds) solid (ice) and liquid (water).

There is more fresh water in the atmosphere than in all of the rivers on the planet combined.

Water can dissolve more substances than any other liquid including sulfuric acid.

FEATURED WATER

SaratogaSaratoga
Most of the Worlds' Bottled Water comes from someplace other than the USA. For 100's and even 1000's of years, the world has been drinking water from springs, or jugs or glass bottles. One water, however, has made its mark in history. From deep beneath the Adirondack foothills flows a well celebrated spring water. An illustrious history is associated with Saratoga® Springs, in upstate NY.

Since the 14th century the springs of Saratoga have quenched the thirst of generations with some of the most crisp, clean tasting waters in the world. In fact, the wealthy from Europe and America came to Saratoga® Springs for generations, in large part to enjoy the fine mineral waters that flow from deep beneath the lush foothills. Soon Saratoga® Springs became one of the most prestigious spa resorts in the country.

Map of source of Saratoga, NY, USAIn 1872 a small family owned business emerged with the discovery of a new, plentiful spring source in Saratoga®.This spring had an especially sweet, crisp taste to it. Born was the Saratoga® Spring Water Company, with the idea to bottle and distribute this delicious water for all to enjoy. For many decades Saratoga® Spring Water Co. remained a family company, bottling the famous waters of Saratoga®. Today, Saratoga Spring Water Co. shares generations of history, heritage, and knowledge. Saratoga® Spring Water has been through many years of change, adaptation, and technology. Their updated bottling plant, and distribution system, operates at this same family-owned site as it once did in 1872.

Saratoga® Sparkling & Non-Sparkling spring water is available in an award winning cobalt blue glass bottle, coming in two sizes, 28 oz (.83L) and 12 oz (.35L).

Drinking more water may help women avoid UTIs

If you are a woman who struggles with the pain of recurring urinary tract infections, a new study suggests that drinking more water could help. A recent study in JAMA, (The Journal of the American Medical Association) shows, women who got recurring bladder infections (they're also called urinary tract infections, or UTIs) who added 1.5 liters of water to their daily intake over 12 months were 50% less likely to get another urinary tract infection than other women who drank less than that amount. The study concludes the reduction in episodes of cystitis (inflammation of the bladder) is likely due to increased urine volume and voids that reduce bacterial load in the bladder.

The original metric system was created with base units that could be derived from the weight of a specified volume of pure water. A liter of water weighs 1 kilo; a cubic meter of water weighs 1 tonne.

A gallon of water weighs 8.34 pounds; a cubic foot of water weighs 62.4 pounds.

If all of the water vapor in our planet’s atmosphere fell as water at once and spread out evenly, it would only cover the globe with about an inch of water.

One (1) gallon of gasoline can contaminate approximately 750,000 gallons of water.

Freshwater animals are disappearing five times faster than land animals due to water contamination.

San PellegrinoSan Pellegrino
San Pellegrino mineral water flows from a thermal spring at the foot of a dolomite mountain wall towering above the Brembo River in the Italian Alps. The town of San Pellegrino Terme is located near Bergamo some 25 kilometers northeast of Milan.

Map of source of San Pellegrino, ItalyThe properties of San Pellegrino® Sparkling Natural Mineral Water were renowned as early as the 12th century. Legend has it that Leonardo da Vinci visited the source while living in Milan. Da Vinci is credited with making the town of San Pellegrino® famous. He wanted to try its miraculous water, and in 1509, dedicated extensive studies and penned a lengthy treatise to water. Use of the water for therapeutic treatment, however, did not begin until the 18th century, due to the difficulties in reaching its remote location. An analysis first done in 1748 demonstrates a composition that is surprisingly similar to that of today.

In 1839, the San Pellegrino® Spring has become a renowned tourist location. The spa was created, and one can now relax their ills in the tubs, showers, adjacent spotless marble rooms and plentiful recreation areas.

In 1899, the societa Anonima delle Terme di San Pellegrino® was founded to commercialize the water. Over the course of the year, 35343 bottles were prepared, and 5562 of these were shipped. By 1908, almost 10 years later, San Pellegrino® was being distributed in all of the main European cities, as well as Cairo, Tangiers, Shanghai, Calcutta, the US, Brazil, Peru and as far away as Australia.

In 1999, San Pellegrino® Spa became part of Nestle Waters. In 2005 San Pellegrino hit a new record of over 500 million bottles sold all over the world. Today, San Pellegrino® Sparkling Natural Mineral Water is the number two sparkling bottled water brand imported into the United States.

At the heart of the Northern Alps lies the source of an all natural, perfectly pure water - evian. It all starts with rain and melting snow on the peaks of the Northern Alps, where each drop of evian water starts its 15+ year journey through layers of glacial sand that ends at evian's protected source on the shores of Lake Geneva. Through this process, the water is filtered naturally, without chemicals, giving evian the purity, mineral content, and taste that nature intended. Every day, samples are taken at over 20 different points between the protected catchment areas and the on-site bottling plant to ensure consistent quality.

Map of source of evian, FranceIn 1789, the Marquis de Lessert, discovered the Cachat Spring, evian's source, in the small town of evian-les-Bains on Lake Geneva. After spending several days drinking from the spring, the nobleman believed that the water aided in passing his kidney stones. News of the event soon spread and crowds gathered to sample the water to ease ailments. By 1878, the Dukes of Savoy issued the first bottling authorization for evian Natural Spring Water.

Badoit Sparkling water Twist Top

Badoit
A timeless gourmet favorite, Badoit is a naturally sparkling mineral water characterized by its abundance of tiny bubbles and its unique, delicate taste. In fact, the name Badoit, (pronounced ba-dwah) is French for fine bubbles.

Badoit is an iconic beverage in the restaurants and homes of France and has long held a special place in the French diet. It makes for an ideal dining accompaniment; its fine and delicate bubbles deliver a clean and crisp taste that enhances but does not overtake other flavors. Bottled since 1838 at its source in the picturesque town of St. Galmier, Badoit has a legendary history in French water consumption. This naturally sparkling water was not only known and prescribed by local doctors for its many healthful properties in the XVIIIth century but was obviously known to the Romans since the remains of thermal baths have been found on the present site of the Badoit factory.

Map of source of Badoit, FranceFor centuries the residents of the town of Saint Galmier have satisfied their need for sparkling, refreshment by partaking directly from the water™ source. Today, the local inhabitants venture to the town™ filling station where they can tap into the sparkling benefits of Badoit whenever the need arises.

Propelled by the pressure of naturally occurring underground gas deposits, Badoit travels the long journey from its deep and ancient source through fissures in the granite sub-strata slowly acquiring its distinct mineral composition, unique taste and its lively, intensely sparkling, carbonation along the way.

Badoit VerandaBadoit is captured at a depth of 100 meters into the granite where it retains a constant temperature of 16°C (61°F). The size of the bubbles of a sparkling mineral water is influenced by its mineral composition. It contains bicarbonates, as well as calcium and fluoride, and has a low sodium content.

Badoit HQIt is also rich in magnesium, an important component of a balanced diet. The source water emerges lightly sparkling, then the carbonation is carefully intensified.

Classic White is the NEW Classic Green. Solé has changed their classic green bottle to a new clear bottle with silver and gold attributes to depict their natural or sparkling nature.

Fonte Solé, located at the heart of the village of Nuvolento in Lombardy, Italy, is a family operated business with a long-standing awareness of environmental and social concerns.

Originally founded by Battista Bodei in 1896, it is now his grandson Giuseppe who continues the tradition of only employing local people. Many years ago, before environmental concerns were paramount, Giuseppe took the decision to bottle Solé Classic in bottles made from recycled glass and to use recycled paper for the labels. Their marketing materials are designed by a social enterprise.

Map of source of SOLE, ItalyFonte Solé is an active supporter of the local community, supplying its pure water without cost to the pupils of the local school.

Naturalness has historically been a core part of Fonte Solé ethos – the natural mineral water they bottle flows directly from the Source into the bottling production line with only the addition of CO2 (itself harvested from a natural process) to create the renowned delicate carbonation of Solé sparkling.

Around the year 1000, the population of Nuvolento was ravaged by plague. At the time, the area was under the control of Benedictine monks and they built their monastery near a water source. To gauge the extent of the plague, the monks would go around knocking on doors: "Ego Sum" was the response that meant the plague had not entered that house. After the epidemic was over, the monks noticed that the only people surviving the plague were those with access to the water from the source near the monastery. They then decided to name that part of the country "Sum". The existing convent on the site of the old monastery and the road named "Antica Fonte", "Ancient Way of the Source" gives credence to this legend.

As a premium bottled natural mineral water, Solé Water is known for its crisp, slightly sweet and refreshing taste. The well-balanced group of minerals in Solé is derived from a natural filtration process as the water works it way through varying geological rocks and minerals to the underground and well-protected source.

Fonte SOLE, Novulento, ItalyThe Sum Source is found in the province of Brescia located in the commune of Nuvolento, situated at the foot of a series of limestone hills that rise to the northeast of Brescia. The hills constitute the Brecian Pre-Alps complex. The oligominerale (low in mineral content) water of the Sum Source emerges at the "Via Antica Fonte" in Nuvolento. This surface outlet would seem to correspond to the point at which the limestone-dolomite formation meets the alluvial deposits from the valley of the river Chiese. It is from this basin that the unique and delicious tasting Solé Water is sourced
