San BenedettoВ
San Benedetto mineral Water comes from glaciers in the Dolomites, part of the Italian Alps in North Eastern Italy. After flowing a great distance underground, the water, which was tapped at the surface in ancient times, is now drawn from 1,000 feet below, in an underground basin in the Veneto Plain. This ensures that all its original features are unchanged, and the natural balance of minerals and trace elements that is essential to our well-being remains uncontaminated.

San Benedetto  was arguably the original favorite of the Republic of Venice, in vogue with aristocratic Venetian families during the Renaissance. It became known as theВ San Benedetto Health Water," and was consumed and appreciated for its curative qualities. Without question,  San Benedetto is an elite, low-mineral delicacy that carries a 30 milligram per liter punch of Magnesium. TheВ San Benedetto bottle is attractive, and is available in both still and sparkling versions.

San Benedetto, one of Italy's Finest (and by the way, there are over 600 of them) has based its own growth on technological innovation. Today it has one of the largest bottling plants in the world.

Trouble At The US Open
The second major of the golf season, the US Open, at Erin Hills in Wisconsin, has brought attention to why bottled water may be important. Bacteria E. Coli was discovered in a drinking fountain near the 12th hole, opening day.  The Washington Ozaukee Public Health Department discovered the E. coli in a sample of water taken at a hydration station. It is presumed that the E. coli originated from a contaminated well connected to the station, which was immediately closed. In response, the U.S. Golf Association had agreed to supply complimentary bottled water at all drinking stations for the duration of the tournament.

Borsec is situated in the Eastern Carpathian Mountains of Transylvania, and is one of the most renowned curative spas in the subalpine, windless, peat-rich county of Harghita, Romania. It is listed in the country's register of historical monuments. Bottling ofВ Borsec commenced over two hundred years ago, and since modernization in 1992, the facility outputs two million liters per month of its legendary "Regina Apelor Minerale SAВ Borsec " (Mineral Water QueenВ Borsec ).

The curative properties of the water were already known in the 1600s, and for centuries it was transported by carts in wooden casks to be served in the Royal Court in Vienna. It was Emperor Franz Josef who dubbedВ Borsecthe "Queen of Mineral Waters." The pH, although slightly acidic, is near enough to neutral to distinguishВ Borsec from other naturally carbonated waters whose carbonic acid origin tends to create much lower final pH levels in the harvested water. The Calcium is high at 310 milligrams per liter. Magnesium and Bicarbonate - are robust at 97 and 1,800 milligrams respectively. However, the Sodium level is very low for a high mineral water at only 53 milligrams per liter. Traditionally,  Borsec has been helpful for circulatory disease, anaemia, disease of the endocrine glands, nervous disease, rickets, renal disease, diabetes, and even for obesity. It's most popular use today is as a super-healthy drinking water.  Borsec was awarded a GOLD medal at 2004 Berkely Springs, WV USA International Water Tasting event, for carbonated waters.

Svalbardi - the term medieval Scandinavian sailors used to describe the ice-covered lands at the top of the world. SvalbarГ°i is an award winning ultra-low mineral, still, Arctic iceberg water. The concept was  derived only a few years ago, but the ice came as fallen snow as far back as 4000 years earlier. Melted icebergs, calved freshly from the fjords around Svalbard, just 600 miles from the North Pole, provide the source for SVALBARÐI pure water.

The ice is harvested, then melted in a specially constructed machine and bottled by hand, capturing the drinking water in its cleanest form. This is all accomplished in the Arctic outpost of Longyearbyen, where the polar bears outnumber the humans in this extreme remote region. In an effort to retain the water’s natural composition and premium taste, no chemistry-altering filters are used, only micron filters and UV light to adhere to international standards. Each expedition yields 13,000 bottles of pure drinking water; each batch is therefore a limited edition. Iceberg waters are some of the rarest in the world due to the difficulty of gathering this arctic water.

A Lemon Slice With Your Mineral Water
If you order a mineral water in the restaurant, cafГ© or bar, you will often get a glass that is decorated with half a lemon slice.  Do you know there was a reason for this ritual?В Armin SchГ¶nenberger , a water sommelier in Germany, answered this question.

"The ritual originated in the Mediterranean basin .... in the warm and humid Mediterranean climate, the bottle corks, which served as bottle caps, began to rust and deteriorate.  As the residue stuck to the edge of the bottle, people used a lemon slice to clean the edge....they then threw the lemon slice into the glass. which in today's hygienic world, might not be acceptable... "

The lemon slice today, no longer has any real function other than appealing to the sense of somehow being fresher.

FIJI Water
The island nation ofВ FIJIВ is a cluster of green islands in a remote area of the Pacific. Far from pollution. Far from acid rain. Far from industrial waste. In fact, the very name “FIJI” has become an icon of beauty, nature, simplicity, and remoteness – and when it comes to drinking water, “remoteness” may be a blessing.

FIJI Water
is drawn from an artesian aquifer that lies hundreds of feet below the edges of a primitive rainforest.  FIJI Water comes from a single place: the remote Yaqara Valley of Viti Levu (one of Fiji two principal islands).  В

It begins as rain falling on the tropical island of Viti Levu’s luxurious north coast. From there it filters down through layer after layer of ancient volcanic rock, cleansed of impurities and contaminants at every stratum. At the same time, this natural filtration process is adding beneficial minerals such as silica, calcium, and magnesium to the water, which contribute to its distinctly soft, smooth Mouthfeels (a professional tasters term that refers to a liquids taste and texture).
At the Acqua FIJI Water spa complex in FIJI Water , Italy, in the province of Frosinone, south of Rome.

FIJI Water'sВ В state-of-the-art bottling facility was designed to protect the purity of the water at every step of the production process, and as part of that strict commitment to quality, no human hands are allowed to touch it. In fact, the facility was built directly on top of theВ FIJI Water aquifer, where a completely sealed delivery system draws the water up from the protected chamber and places it directly into the iconic square bottles, which are made from the highest-grade terephthalate (PET) plastic resin.

Until you unscrew the cap,  FIJI Waternever meets the compromised air of the 21st century nor is it touched by another human being.

As mentioned in last month's edition, Fiji is rolling out a new slimmer design for all of its bottles.

Can bottled water lead to tooth decay?
A recent article published by Bridge Creek Dental, in Billings Montana, has stated that drinking bottled water can lead to tooth decay. The premise is based on many bottled waters are acidic, which in turn can lead to the breakdown of the tooth enamel.

It is estimated that Americans drink up to 8.4 billion gallons of bottled water every year. It's a great alternative to soda since it contains no sugar or calories.

в–Є It provides a convenient way to hydrate on the go.
в–Є Most people consider it safer than tap water.
в–Є Some people prefer the taste compared to other beverages.

Recent studies have shown that some popular brands of bottled water areВ predominantly acidicВ with aВ pH as low as 4.0. A pH of 7 is considered neutral. Anything with a pH above that is considered alkaline and those below it are considered acidic.
The constant exposure to the acidic water throughout the day, can in turn corrode or break down your tooth enamel, making you more susceptible to cavities and tooth decay.

The acidity is caused by the extreme filtration and oxidation processes bottling companies employ to treat water before bottling it. Fine Waters are not treated in this manner, however pH may vary naturally as a result of the mineral content in the water.

In the hills just south of Rome, lies the small medieval town of Fiuggi The obscure conglomerate of stone buildings gained renown as early as the 1300s, when Pope Boniface VIII claimed his kidney stones had been healed by the mineral waters that gushed forth from the nearby Fiuggi spring. Two centuries later they relieved Michelangelo of what he called "the only kind of stone I couldn't love." Soon the miraculous acqua di Fiuggi was being sent in bottles to all of Europe's royalty.

water gushes out from two thermal baths and one of these: the Boniface VIII Spring is where Italians go to “take the water”. The fountains from which healing spring water is obtained are set within a large park. Locals and tourists alike used the surroundings as a meeting place for centuries to chat and discuss the news as they sip from the spring.

Fiuggi water is a natural, oligomineral water that pervades tufaceous (calcareous and siliceous rock deposits) hollows beneath the spas of Fiuggi. The scientific effect is a filtering action that purifies and reduces mineralization in the water, while creating a potent diuretic chemistry. Fiuggi is prescribed in Italy for expulsion of kidney stones, and supposedly inhibits their formation; it is also prescribed during preparation urinary calculosis procedures and post-op treatment. In all, there's little question that Fiuggi is beneficial for the kidneys and urinary tract, and it is also effective against uric acid in general, which is the basis of gout and uratic arthropathies. The water has a very acidic pH of 6.8 and a very low TDS of 122. Fiuggi was the official water of JUBILEE 2000, and it is rumored to be the choice at the Vatican.

At theAcqua Fiuggi spa complex in Fiuggi, Italy, in the province of Frosinone, south of Rome.

A documentary aired on CNN about Fiuggi water, two years ago. The water which claims to help heal Kidney stones, has newer publications backing those claims. Sales at Aqua Maestro quadrupled for the ensuing two weeks following the airing. Now two years later, sales continue to remain high. You can watch the video and hear the description for yourself.

The Everything Guide To Bottled Water

At least, that is the name of a recent article published in New York Magazine (nymag.com). Six staff writers took on the project of looking into the continued success of bottled water. Since bottled water is expected to outsell soft drinks this year, what is it that is propelling this market? They broke it down into categories, such as; pH adjusted, natural sparkling waters, passed through rock, boxed, and cheaper waters.

The article continued with bottled versus tap...and environmental issues. Topics we could discuss at length but choose to sit them out. Then an interesting section, "Ask a Water Sommelier," and that would be Martin Riese who we have discussed numerous times. It's a noteworthy read, and you can find it here >

Those are water bottles you see scattered along the roadway. This accident occurred near Lafayette, Indiana. The driver of the over-turned truck fell asleep approaching the bridge. The truck jack-knifed while trying to avoid hitting the side. The added unfortunate part is that the tanker was right behind him, and split the truck in two creating a fire in the process. Both drivers escaped unharmed.

Evian Featured Water

In a region where water has been famous for its beneficial properties since antiquity, the Volvic valley has kept the qualities of its water a deeply buried secret for centuries.

Volvic water is drawn from the heart of the Parc Naturel des Volcans d'Auvergne in central France, a protected environment, free from industry and intensive farming. The ancient "Temple of Mercury" crowns the summit of the famous Puy de Dôme, proving the volcanoes have been recognized and revered for centuries.

Volvic water is created by rainwater that seeps very slowly underground through porous layers of puzzolana and fissured lava down to the impermeable granite bed on the old valley bottom. When it reaches the impervious bedrock, the water slowly flows downstream where it is captured over 90 meters deep.

Volvic water is drawn from deep inside the lush, green ancient volcanoes of the Auvergne in France. Specifically, taken from the Clairivic spring in the Massif Central region.

Volvic, as the name implies, has a volcanic geological basis, most evident in its 30 mg/l level of Silica, one of the world's more potent mineral water sources for this element. The perfectly neutral pH of 7.0, and overall low 109 mg/l total mineralization, makes Volvic a special water, truly unique in its chemistry. At 6.3 mg/l, the Nitrate level is a little higher, but in the case of Volvic, this slight excess is probably offset by the water's virtues.

George Washington University Quiet On Conservation Progress
The University pledged to reduce spending on plastic water bottles by 50 percent by the end of fiscal year 2016, which ended in June (5 months ago). They also embarked on an aggressive plan to reduce water usage, by upgrading faucets and toilets in academic and residence buildings. Numerous other University's and the National Parks System, thought the same thing, only to find out, plastic usage did not drop. Instead of water bottles filling the garbage cans, it had a much higher content of soda, and teas. These studies revealed the average individual is still going to consume a drink. By taking away bottled water, they have been forced to drink less healthy options. Stay tuned.

Sunlight Helps Bottle This Water
We have shown you water generators, used in the military, to extract water from air. It works much like an air conditioner, pulling the moisture out of a room. This solar cell, accomplishes the same thing, but using solar power. Cody Friesen, a professor of engineering at Arizona State University, developed "Source," the company behind the solar panel. In conjunction with Zero Mass Water, a company also founded by Friesen, they are able to produce about 5 liters a day - enough to satisfy a family of four. Source adds calcium and magnesium to match the flavor and pH of bottled water. Because Source is powered entirely by solar energy, it can operate far from a power grid.

/Birch Water Being Harvested
That's right....harvested. A picture is worth 1000 words. We thought this was worthwhile to give you a glimpse of what takes place to harvest, Birch, Maple, and Bamboo water. Tree waters are packed with electrolytes (minerals), and they are naturally very hydrating for the body.  Electrolytes are responsible for directing water (and nutrients) to the areas of the body where itРІР‚в„ўs needed most. Conversely, to coconut water, tree waters are all very low in sugars – birch water has four times less sugar than coconut water. Bamboo water is the highest natural source of silica, which supports the body with collagen production. Birch water is anti-inflammatory, while maple water is high in antioxidants and manganese, which supports thyroid and bone health.*

Fonte Sole, located at the heart of the village of Nuvolento in Lombardy, Italy, is a family operated business with a long-standing awareness of environmental and social concerns.

Originally founded by Battista Bodei in 1896, it is now his grandson Giuseppe who continues the tradition of only employing local people. Many years ago, before environmental concerns were paramount, Giuseppe took the decision to bottle Sole Classic in bottles made from recycled glass and to use recycled paper for the labels. Their marketing materials are designed by a social enterprise.

Fonte Sole is an active supporter of the local community, supplying its pure water without cost to the pupils of the local school.

Naturalness has historically been a core part of Fonte Sole's ethos – the natural mineral water they bottle flows directly from the Source into the bottling production line with only the addition of CO2 (itself harvested from a natural process) to create the renowned delicate carbonation of Sole sparkling.

Around the year 1000, the population of Nuvolento was ravaged by plague. At the time, the area was under the control of Benedictine monks and they built their monastery near a water source. To gauge the extent of the plague, the monks would go around knocking on doors: "Ego Sum" was the response that meant the plague had not entered that house. After the epidemic was over, the monks noticed that the only people surviving the plague were those with access to the water from the source near the monastery. They then decided to name that part of the country "Sum". The existing convent on the site of the old monastery and the road named "Antica Fonte", "Ancient Way of the Source" gives credence to this legend.

As a premium bottled natural mineral water, Sole Water is known for its crisp, slightly sweet and refreshing taste. The well-balanced group of minerals in Sole is derived from a natural filtration process as the water works it way through varying geological rocks and minerals to the underground and well-protected source.

The Sum Source is found in the province of Brescia located in the commune of Nuvolento, situated at the foot of a series of limestone hills that rise to the northeast of Brescia. The hills constitute the Brecian Pre-Alps complex. The oligominerale (low in mineral content) water of the Sum Source emerges at the "Via Antica Fonte" in Nuvolento. This surface outlet would seem to correspond to the point at which the limestone-dolomite formation meets the alluvial deposits from the valley of the river Chiese. It is from this basin that the unique and delicious tasting Sole Water is sourced.

Air Force Dumps Toxic Water

U.S. Air Force officials confirmed more than 150,000 gallons of water tainted with perfluorinated chemicals — otherwise known as PFCs — leaked out of a retention tank at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The contaminated water made its way into a city wastewater treatment plant before crews could stop it. And from there, it flowed into a creek that feeds into other waterways. Officials say the leak didn't pose a threat to Colorado Springs' drinking water.

10/1/2016 6:10 AM By Aqua Maestro 2016,

Iceberg water is a very unique product, in a category all by itself. It is an all natural, truly virginal water with almost no trace of minerals. This water's journey started over 15,000 years ago in the ancient glaciers of western Greenland. It has been safely stored in the ice cap, protected by the ocean and the hazardous conditions of the arctic weather.

Isolation has made its source totally inaccessible to man. It is not until massive pieces of ice break off into the ocean in the form of icebergs that they can be harvested. Icebergs are melted and bottled under strict quality conditions in order to preserve the water's natural qualities.

Production can be limited due to extended winters and the harsh conditions of the North Atlantic. Harvesting icebergs is a dangerous task. They are very unstable, shift frequently and can roll over in seconds, which make the possibility of drinking iceberg water an accomplishment in itself.

Berg water comes from Icebergs, a unique source. Berg should not be confused with glacier water. The main difference is that glacier water is bottled after it melts to the pools at the base of the glacier, coming in contact with land. Iceberg water is harvested directly from the icebergs, and is not exposed to ground contaminants.

There are other waters that have a low TDS (total dissolved solids). However, Berg water has a TDS of less than 10 ppm, one of the lowest in the market. Since icebergs have the consistency of concrete, seawater is unable to penetrate the ice and contaminate the mineral content. The result is pure, clean water with the crisp natural taste of melted snow.

Harvesting is mostly done by hand and small quantities so the impact in the environment is almost non-existent. Icebergs melt naturally in the ocean, so instead of exploiting springs or underground aquifers, Berg collects the water before it disappears into the sea. The water is bottled in its natural state, without significant processing in order to preserve its natural properties. The water maintains the same composition and characteristics both at the time of bottling and collection.

As a reminder, the map on the right shows just how far Berg extends into the Northern Atlantic. The island is isolated from direct contact with the mainland.

The only way our cases of water arrive here, are by Ferry. In the dead of winter, another problem arises, shown by the next image which is a ferry stuck in the ice. It took 3 days last winter to free this ferry.

We have done something different this month to recognize our loyal members of our Water of the Month club. Registered members of the club, as of the first of September, will receive Berg Water this month. If you are not familiar with the club, a member pays just $ 29.00 (for glass) and $19.00 (for plastic), plus freight, and will receive a different water every month. Berg regularly sells for $180, and $150 for glass and plastic respectively. This month, it's a gift from Aqua Maestro. It's our way to show our appreciation. Enjoy!

US Bottled Water Facts
This paragraph should really be in the "Believe It Or Not" section. These are some important facts to digest about the bottled water industry.

  • Domestic, non-sparkling water is the largest and strongest segment of the US bottled Water Market.

  • Bottled Water is about to become the largest commercial beverage category in the US.

  • In 2013, the average per capita was 31.66 gallons. In 2014, that jumped to 34 gallons per person. and in 2015, became 36.5 gallons, for every man, woman, and child.

  • In contrast to 1976, most Americans drank an average of 1.6 gallons. (of bottled water, which was not a very big industry, at the time).

  • Nearly all of the bottled water sold in the US is sourced domestically. Imported bottled water accounts for only 1.5% of the US market. (Aqua Maestro is a tiny piece of that 1.5%)

Despite the bottled water industry size, the amount of water sold is relatively tiny, compared to tap water volumes. US public water systems supply more than one billion gallons of tap water an hour, every hour of the day.

Ok, ready for this fact? The amount of bottled water Americans buy in one year would only supply US tap water needs from midnight until 9 am on January 1!

IBWA...Bottled Water's Watch Dog

We're glad someone is looking out for us! The International Bottled Water Association continues to respond to misleading articles about bottled water. As more people choose bottled water over carbonated soft drinks, the sales of water will exceed those of soda, for the first time, this coming year. Some media outlets have increased their coverage of the bottled water industry, however usually misrepresenting the industry and siding with the critics. IBWA has recently responded to inaccurate and misleading articles published in the Huffington Post, Bloomberg, and the Las Vegas Review.
